On 6th November the Polish Embassy in London organised a concert dedicated to the late Judge George Dobry, an eminent lawyer and supporter of the Polish-British relations.

Among the guests were members of Judge Dobry’s immediate family, as well as representatives of the legal profession from the United Kingdom and Poland.

“Judge Dobry was an outstanding lawyer, author of many groundbreaking legal publications and a founder of more than a few international institutions and professional bodies”, said Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki. “He will also be remembered as a staunch advocate for close Polish-British cooperation. His passing earlier this year was an irreparable loss not only to his family and colleagues, but also to both of our countries”, added the Ambassador. Judge Dobry’s example will serve as an inspiration for the next generation of lawyers in Poland and the United Kingdom.

Lord Carnwath, Judge of the Supreme Court, and Damian Falkowski also remembered their friend, Judge Dobry, his great work ethic and unstoppable energy even in the late years of his life.

The speeches were followed by the recital of the music of Frederic Chopin, Karol Szymanowski and Henryk Wieniawski performed by a group of Polish musicians led by Damian Falkowski. The concert and the following networking reception were an excellent opportunity for the guests not only to honour Judge Dobry, but also to share their professional experiences.

Judge George Dobry was born in Warsaw in 1918 but he left Poland in 1936 to study law in Edinburgh. Due to regime change in Poland after the Second World War, he decided to stay in the United Kingdom where he became a Queen’s Counsel in 1969. Among Judge Dobry’s most important achievements is the reform of the British planning law. In Poland, which he visited only after the end of communism, Judge Dobry is mostly known as the founder of the British Law Centre at the University of Warsaw. For his service Judge Dobry was decorated with the highest state awards: The Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland and Commander of the British Empire. Judge George Dobry passed away in March this year at the age of 99.
