August 15 is a special day for the Polish army. Approved on July 30, 1992 by the Sejm, the Armed Forces Day is one of the most important holidays in Poland and it is a public holiday. It commemorates the anniversary of the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia at the Battle of Warsaw, also known as the "Miracle of the Vistula".

The battle took place in the culminating days of the 1920 war. The Battle of Warsaw was the deciding factor in Poland keeping its independence and stopping the Bolsheviks’ revolution spilling all over Europe. It went down in history as one of the most important in both Polish and world military history.

One of the most important episodes of the Battle of Warsaw took place on August 15. The 203rd Uhlan Regiment (Poland’s cavalry) captured the offices of the soviet 4th army in Ciechanów, at the same time capturing warehouses and one of the two radio stations used by Russians to communicate with the command in Minsk.

August 15 is also the feast day of the Assumption of Mary in the Catholic Church. On this day, many masses take place in honour of the fallen, and a celebratory mass is held in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

In Poland, as is the tradition every year, the Armed Forces Day is celebrated in many towns, cities and villages. One of the most important celebrations is the military parade in Warsaw involving soldiers from different branches of the military as well as military vehicles and other equipment. The parade takes place along the Ujazdów Avenue. The celebrations are also held at the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw and they start on August 14. In Wrocław, the honor company walks through the old market to the accompaniment of the military orchestra, and those living in the city can visit the garrison throughout the day. A military parade also takes place in Bydgoszcz. In Ossów, near Wołomin and Zielonka, the Battle of Warsaw is being reconstructed.
